The European Investigative Journalism Conference

Kickstart your data journalism

Do you consider yourself a beginner when it comes to data? Would you like an overview of how data journalism is done and try your hand at it?

We no longer run beginner sessions at the Dataharvest conference, but over the coming months, you can join us as we show how to analyse data using Excel, Google Sheets, R, and Python. And you are welcome, whether you come to the conference or not!

Arena’s Ada Homolová and Jonathan Stoneman, the coordinators of the data journalism sessions at Dataharvest, will be your guides.

We’ll provide you with a demo (and even some homework if you’re up for it!).

Each session is 45 minutes long, followed by a Q&A. They will be streamed live on YouTube. You can register for as many as you want. To receive the link to the sessions directly in your inbox, make sure to sign up!

The dates are:

  • Monday 17 March 2025 / 17:30 CET: Excel – The starting point for any aspiring data journalist. Learn to explore your data by sorting, filtering and doing pivot tables.
  • Thursday 3 April 2025 / 16:30 CET: Google Sheets – Still spreadsheets, but a bit different. We recap everything above and add some extra nifty tricks to up your data analysis game.
  • Monday 14 April 2025 / 16:30 CET:  R – Want to move beyond spreadsheets? R is a programming language designed for statistical analysis that can save you from the hassle of repetitive tasks and the headache of hunting for errors in your analysis.
